Overall, this Web site does well meeting the guidelines of usability, functionality and accessibility. The site is user-friendly and the child visiting should not have any problems finding the information needed, as it is presented in a clear, concise manner. The site is easy to navigate, all of the links work, and any information that the child might be searching for could easily be accessed.The National Geographic Kids Web site is designed very tastefully, and is consistent throughout each page of the site. The color scheme is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and is very inviting to any child who may visit the site. The information is broken up into clearly defined areas as well, allowing for flow of the page and easy scanning.
The animation on the site, while adding a unique element, is a bit distracting because of the extra noise it adds to the page. If a child using a computer that is not “up to par” with technology, the pages will load slower and cause frustration when using the site. If the animation was limited or eliminated, this would help improve the site.
Overall, I think the site meets the goals intended: educating kids about science. The site is very usable for kids, is very inviting, and also provides a plethora of educational activities pictures and games to make learning about science fun!
